S.Revathi

Posted on April 9, 2026April 14, 2026

Constable (now Head Constable) S.Revathi (also referred to as R. Revathi) is a woman police officer with about 21 years of service in the Tamil Nadu Police.

She was posted as a head constable/sentry at the Sathankulam police station in Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) district, Tamil Nadu, in June 2020.She is being widely discussed right now (April 2026) because a Madurai district court recently (on April 6, 2026) sentenced nine policemen to death for the 2020 custodial torture and murder of trader P. Jayaraj (aged ~60) and his son J. Bennix (also spelled Beniks/Emmanuel Bennix, aged 31).

Her eyewitness testimony was the key factor that broke the usual police silence/cover-up and helped secure this landmark conviction after six years.

What happened (the Sathankulam custodial deaths case)- On June 19, 2020 (during strict COVID-19 lockdown), the father and son were detained at Sathankulam police station for allegedly keeping their mobile phone repair shop open past permitted hours — a minor violation.

Inside the station, a group of officers (including the inspector and sub-inspectors) subjected them to extreme, prolonged brutality: repeated lathi blows, stripping them naked, tying their hands, and beating them mercilessly for hours into the night.

The walls and floor were covered in blood; lathis were stained with blood. The victims were in agony, screaming and pleading.

Revathi was on night duty that evening. She witnessed the entire horrific scene firsthand. She described hearing screams, seeing the blood-soaked lathis and floors, the victims being forced to clean their own blood, and the officers (including superiors) participating without mercy. At one point she even tried to offer the injured men water/coffee, but was stopped.

What Revathi did-

She refused to stay silent. Despite being a lower-ranking officer surrounded by her superiors and colleagues who were involved, she came forward as a direct eyewitness.

In July 2020, during the magistrate’s inquiry, she gave a detailed, courageous statement describing the torture. She alerted the magistrate that blood-stained lathis and other evidence needed to be seized immediately before they could be destroyed.

She faced heavy pressure, intimidation, and threats from within the force. She expressed fear for her own safety and her two young daughters, so the Madras High Court immediately ordered police protection for her family.

She stood by her testimony in court again in later years (including 2022), even though it meant going against her own department.

Her statement was pivotal: it provided rare internal corroboration that the deaths were not “natural” or due to pre-existing conditions (as initially claimed) but the direct result of custodial torture.

This helped trigger a CBI probe, arrests of the officers, and ultimately the death penalty verdict.

Why the massive discussion now : The April 6, 2026 judgment is seen as a rare instance of accountability in a custodial death case in India. Social media, news outlets, and the public are praising Revathi as a “hero in uniform,” “angel of justice,” and symbol of conscience within the police force.

People are calling her bravery extraordinary because it is extremely rare for a police officer (especially a woman constable) to testify against fellow officers in such cases.

In short: Revathi didn’t commit any wrongdoing — she did the opposite. She risked her career, safety, and family to speak the truth about police brutality she witnessed, and her courage directly led to justice being served six years later.

That is why her name is everywhere right now.
